Getting into Coleridge

4 January 2016 By Bel Leave a Comment

Several weeks ago, my brother asked me the following question:

If you could read the works of only one poet, one novelist & one essayist for the rest of your life, who would they be?

My response:

Poet – Coleridge. Simply because that would be the only way I would get round to reading his works. I keep meaning to, but then something else comes up.

Novelist – VS Naipaul.

Essayist – can’t think of any.

I really mean that about Coleridge. I keep wanting to get into his work. Apart from regarding him as an extraordinarily gifted poet, I have yet to form deeply-held views about his poetry. I think now is a good time to start. Will let you know what I discover.
