Reading list – August 2022

Here’s what I’m reading during August:

The Pyramid of Lies, by Duncan Mavin. This is the story of Lex Greensill, and the collapse of the eponymous bank. The Greensill scandal shook the UK finance industry, and dented the reputation of a former British Prime Minister. So how were things allowed to get so out of hand? Duncan Mavin does a great research job here, and he is an easy storyteller. A good read.

Plus two books I carried over from last month:

  • The Nowhere Office, by Julia Hobsbawm. An interesting book about the new culture of remote working. Great book for managers of organisations as they lead their staff through a massive culture shift.

  • The Complete Whisky Course: a Comprehensive Tasting School in Ten Classes, by Robin Robinson;
  • Four Thousand Weeks, by Oliver Burkeman.

Lots of good stuff announced at WWDC earlier this week.

My eyes are on the new M2 MacBook Air. I’m also looking forward to the release of iOS 16 and iPadOS 16.

Not sure about Apple’s thinking behind the updated 13” MacBook Pro. Given that it’s so close in size and pricing to the new MacBook Air, it would make sense for most buyers to pick the latter.

Thing is, for the vast majority of people out there, the MacBook Air is more than enough. And, for those who need something more powerful from the MacBook line-up, there are the 14” and 16” MacBook Pro models from last year. Those contain way more firepower than the 13” MacBook Pro.

So I’m not sure where the 13” MacBook Pro fits these days. Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s phased out in the coming years.
